WebAssign setup

  1. Go to UW Bookstore and buy a copy of the "Physics 123 Laboratory Manual Autumn 2009" (for 123) or "Physics 119 Laboratory Manual Autumn 2009" (for 119).  Then read the front matter.  It explains the course structure, grades and policies.

  2. Get a WebAssign account.  You will need this for the labs as well as the lectures, and there are separate charges for each.  Depending on your course, there may be different ways to pay for WebAssign access:

    1. Online with credit card.  This method always works, and it works for all courses that use WebAssign.  The charge is $12.85/qtr for labs, $17.00/qtr for 123 lecture (Tipler & Mosca Text), $15.95/qtr for 116 lecture (Walker Text)
    2. With text access code.  This method only works for 123 labs, and only if you have a UW edition, Tipler & Mosca 6th ed. text bought new at the UW bookstore.  There is no access code included for 119 labs in the 116 text--the access code there is for lecture only.
    3. If you have problems, please check with http://webassign.net/user_support/student/.
  3. Do the pre-lab on WebAssign for the first lab.  The due date is midnight the day before your section meets.  Note: "due date" means the *latest* time you may submit your response.  The system will close you out if you are even one second past!  So, do not wait until the last hour to submit your work, or you may find the network bogged down. Note that prelabs will generally be available on Friday evening for the following week.

There are two parts to the pre-lab: (1) A PDF of instructions and discussion and.  (2) a set of WebAssign problems to work and submit answers to.  The PDF may have versions of these questions, and you may want to read through them to get your thinking in order, but the ones that count are on WebAssign. Note that this is not a test, but it is required that you finish it before the lab.

The login for WebAssign is https://www.webassign.net/washington/login.html

Click the "login" button and log in with your UW Net ID.  The classes that you are registered for should appear when you get onto the site.  You have a grace period of 2 weeks past the start of term to use WebAssign without paying.

There is a brief tutorial on how to get started with WebAssign here (PDF):
